STUDYING VFX IN ADELAIDE
I was passionate about computers and wanted to get into IT so I enrolled into a computer multimedia course at UniSA. I first learned programing, then was introduced to the creative side of computing - VFX! During my course I had the opportunity through UniSA to do a media industry placement at Rising Sun Pictures (RSP). (RSP now deliver a number of courses in partnership with UniSA). So began my new passion! The VFX course was really interesting, interactive and prepared me for working in a real studio. A week after my course finished I was offered a job with Rising Sun Pictures! I have been able to use both skill sets, my programming and creative side. So far it has been an amazing journey!
WHAT I ENJOY ABOUT THE VFX INDUSTRY
The dress code! I get to wear flip flops, shorts and t-shirts, it gives me the chance to break out some of the loud shirts in my wardrobe.
After working in my current role for a year I've found that I enjoy working with people, and I think I'm good at it?! Based on that, I am looking for the opportunity to give coordinating a go and see where that leads me.
WHAT I LIKE THE MOST ABOUT MY ROLE AT RSP
Talking and meeting all the different artists in the building (there are over 200 staff!). My role provides me with an opportunity to help everyone with their problems, and as a result get to know them too!
I love making people smile, so when the company asked if I want to get dressed up as Santa & Thor, of course I say yes and it's fun!
WHY IS ADELAIDE SUCH A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE
Commuting to work takes only 15-20 minutes! Travelling around Adelaide is really quick compared to other big cities around Australia and the world, which makes catching up with friends so easy.
COFFEE OF CHOICE
Mocha, there needs to be enough chocolate to mask the taste of coffee!
SOME THINGS ABOUT ME YOU DON’T KNOW
I work part-time on weekends as a swimming teaching. I’ve been teaching the water babies classes for the past couple of years, and it’s been amazing fun! I also drive a red car called ‘Sonic’, - red goes faster!
Jurassic Park and Love Actually.
BATMAN OR THOR
Thor, because of his immaculate hair.
Not so much a phobia, but I am terrible with horror movies! I've seen two in the last 5 years and still haven't recovered. However I did take a girl to the movies to watch IT. Being scary and all, she would cuddle into me during the scary parts... while I would be holding her close out of fear! ..... She's now my girlfriend, so it's not that bad! "
WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS
More breakfasts! Especially with pancakes, eggs and bacon that looks like a smiley face. A happy bit of breakfast goes a long way to making someone's day great!
ADVICE TO ASPIRING ARTISTS
Not knowing what you want to do is ok! Work with what you feel is right and explore new things to discover your own strengths. Discovering comp as your passion after starting as a modeller is great, don’t be afraid to change and pursue a new passion.
